The home and cemetery were then purchased by the City of Industry. The most popular activities at Piute Ponds are bird watching, photography, and waterfowl hunting. The area is used all year by Branch Elementary School as an outdoor laboratory. Franklin Canyon is part of the Pacific Flyway and as a result the resident bird species often share company with neo-tropical migrants and other transient species, such as Canada geese. At one time, there was a lily pond on the property, but in 1941 while Fields was out of town, neighbor-actor Anthony Quinn’s two-year-old son drowned in it. Fields was so upset that on his return, he immediately had the pond filled in.

The area has always drawn celebrities who seek security, peace, luxury and privacy. Some of the first residents were Cecil B. DeMille, whose home was built on the highest point with stunning views, and Charlie Chaplain. Angelina Jolie bought the Cecil B. DeMille Mansion in 2017 for $24.5 million.
The walls running east to west are clad in Hardipanel and the walls north to south in wood creating a strong visually dynamic play of form and color. The Hardipanel walls (blue) run from exterior to interior, creating a series of thresholds that demarcate the public and private realms of the house. This cladding approach is a strategy that has worked well for the architects for projects located in the Charlottesville, VA region. The Hardipanel cladding is low maintenance and not subject to mould – a common problem with the humidity typical of the mid-Atlantic region. Though he didn’t own the house, not believing in home ownership, Fields rented the home in 1940 and added a pool table, a ping-pong table and bowling lanes set up in the living room – but almost no furniture. A legendary party guy, he had three bars in the house, including a portable bar, and lived there until his death in 1946. The house won a Society of American Registered Architects’ design award. The tiled floors have radiant heat, and two secondary bedroom suites have balconies. Over 250 species of birds have been documented at the Piute Ponds Complex. In 2004 the National Audubon Society designated the Ponds as an "Important Bird Area of California." Piute Ponds is one of a few areas in the state supporting a successful White faced Ibis rookery.
Also located in the city of Industry is Workman High School named after William Workman.
